I got an inkling of an idea...a new challenge...and this one is gonna take some serious work...Imagine an anthology on the theme of Lover's Etiquette. Not like the Emily POst type---but a time when someone near and dear did something you regarded as heinous...or maybe you yourself.

Write a poem on that theme---nothing adds insult to injury quite like a person looking at you with a dumbass look that suggests they had no idea why you are ticked. So let's write the book, shall we?

BE SPECIFIC. Lying. Cheating. Omission, Or maybe my all time favorite---"I thought you'd be more upset if you knew..." This would go hand in glove with this week's question. And it's a great shot for catharsis and maybe a bit of closure as well...

So who wants to help write the Book of Love?

Problems at home
but they were always there
blamed for living
when older brother didn't...

you knew that a child should love parents
with good reason
and you wanted to show what you knew

More than anything,
at least, surely more than that
infinite love you
swore you held for me

Just out of high school
I was a virgin in so many ways
I gave you some all too willingly
and you took the rest

Did more crying in that relationship
than in any other
mostly hurting because you did
crying because you needed to

I asked you to wed me
in a move that only now I see was so dumb
but, I needed to get a career first and quick
vo-tech for this college-bound mind

Best bud came home
stationed away in the service
he knew our engagement
best man to be

Yes, he visited us
me some
but you, more
more that I just couldn't see for the blinders

Your parents wanted you under control
You wanted out of their home
I was too slow an escape
and isn't Best better?

A trip you said
you had to take
to get away from your mom and dad
and he had invited any of his fiends to come visit, after all

Helped you pack
in secret
and even didn't tell your parents
when they called...like you said not to

But, I made him, the Best
call them
tell them
and let them know.

A month later?
I read the announcement of your child's
impending birth
the real reason you never came back...

Finally, one had given you what you wanted
but, even that wasn't enough.
oh, you're both married today...
to different people.

Me? Still single
still without fetter
still without heir
but a lil bit wiser now.

There are so many times
my heart has been wounded
that aching pain inflicted;

and pick one...

I am not a young chickie anymore
I wanted to settle down
be with someone who loved me
for who I am,
and there you were.

I gave my heart
I thought
"gosh, he seems so sweet"
We shared so many wonderful times
over the ten years we spent together,
your love was sweet and tender
you brought me to
the deepest passion
I had ever felt,
I let go with you,
I trusted.

Subltle, at first, the signs
but I noticed your attraction
to the girl my daughter's age,
you started hanging out in the young lady's room
on some stupid pretense,
not to mention you said you
wanted children with her
but still wanted me.

Give me a break;
all the while the joke
was really on you,
she was just a prick tease
and you were taking the bait.

You were so transparent.
when she came into the room
you tripped over yourself
to go to her
left me standing.
I don't think you realized
how foolish you looked.

The final time, well I had it...
sure enough, there you were
late at night and yes
I was insane with jealousy.
how dare you do this to me.
I slapped you....I was glad
I didn't have a weapon.

Yes the time does heal
and we learn
but there are some things
I will not live with.....

The very first time
I made love
was under an autumn moon
laying there in the dew damp grass
uncertain,
gazing up at you.

We left a high school dance
ready to take a chance
to explore the bounderies
of sexual love.

I know,
I wasn't the "first" for you
to this day that breaks my heart.
I wish It could have meant as much to you.
our adventure in the dark.

Fourteen
ready to "prove"
my love to you.
I was uncertain
not knowing what to do.

I remember you telling me
you weren't "satisfied"
In my innocence,
I had no idea what that meant!
Still, it couldnt take away
from the "first love" I felt inside.

I had loved you at that time
before we even met,
after spending a hot, sticky summer
falling in lust and love,
so when you asked me for this gift
I didn't even hesitate, I quietly said "yes".

Now all these years have passed
since that time I gave you the sweetest
part of me, and my love is still the same
and so are tears I cry.

You walked away back then
sneaking into the arms of my friend
or maybe to the pleasures
that lay between slutty thighs
I guess you really WEREN'T satisified
with my slice of cherry pie.

Years roll on
back and forth
you married another
and so did I,
the hurt and pain
caused both marriages
to die.

We ended up together
just like I always prayed we would
like I knew we should.
I love you so,
I guess you don't or maybe you won't
comprehend that the "first time"
I gave you my whole heart
and my soul.
Anything,or Anyone after
never mattered to me.
Just going through the motions.
Trying to get over you.
I never did.

When you hurt me
when you are silent
with rage and lies
the tears don't fall
just from loving eyes.

It's all the pain
of all those years.
Of a broken heart
a teenage girl 22 years ago
a woman now
wanting to share the world
To give it all to you,
to me, our family.
I can't understand,
why would you,
how could you,
betray me?

out of curiosity, or boredom.
When you try for deep,
you're asking for it all,
so let's not claim
you had no idea.
I just don't believe
you didn't know what you were doing,
that would suggest that you and your heart
are barely on speaking terms,
cold strangers who nod poltely,
but really don't converse.
So the possibilities are two:
You knew exactly what you were doing,
which makes you a lot more
than a bit of a bastard,
or you really DIDN'T know
which makes you a gifted sort of stupid.
I just would like to know which.

It started out exciting
Like the buds that burst in bloom
and your eyes stood out like hat pegs
As I walked into a room,
Your pulse you said beat faster,
As the garden of love saw day
but all too soon my sweet, sweet, love,
The weeds got in the way.
You choked my life with possessiveness,
and jealousy did abound,
and like the brambles of a blackberry
you pierced my heart I found.
You saw the ending of my bloom,
A rose that stood so strong,
So I threw you on the compost heap
The place where you belong.
This wilted Rose shall rise again
and will avoid another thistle,
Will listen to the gentle wind
as to my petals whistle.
To send my seed to garden new,
Where I shall spend my hours
With love with me for company ,
Sorting weeds out from the flowers,

We were getting along pretty well,
Talking every night for about a month,
Chatting all the time in school,
Just getting to know each other I suppose.
You seemed like a really nice guy--
But you were a little shy,
You could only get up the nerve
To halfway ask me out,
And I was never quite sure what you wanted
So I just didn't push it.
Your shyness seemed kind of cute,
Endearing in a way,
Old school adorable.
I figured that you were scared,
That you didn't want to go out on a limb,
I thought that maybe you didn't want to get
Your heart broken.
But you flirted with me every chance you got,
Like there was no tomorrow,
And there was definitely something between us,
But I couldn't place it,
I couldn't name it,
It was just 'something.'
So it took me by complete surprise,
Brought confusion to my door,
And rattled my bones a little,
When you casually mentioned something,
Today.
Did it just slip your mind,
Or were you just testing the waters?

Living in dark silence I was worth none to you,
waiting for decisions made without me, as you tried
new beaus, yet if my eye wandered, you cried in my
arms, kissing me, loving me like I was all you had,
then knowing I came back, you left me like a stone
from your shoe. Bleeding on me, taking me as I didn't
know, loving on my one desire, following when I strayed,
locking me up when I was home, the love didn't want
to mend, just drizzle slowly, a sad rain pounding
thick windows a slow chill once you said you were
through, demanding we split apart. The appearing as
a ghost every night, stalking me as I walked the empty
streets, ignoring the chill, the moon, the calls from you.
I sat where the cool floating breeze carried me away,
where you couldn't find me to this very day,
and it all cost me the years I could have been
a father,someone's something, yet it all seemed
I wasn't good enough, wasn't high enough, didn't
sing the right notes to find love, that is the legacy,
the knowing, the hurting and the once best love I
ever knew.

OM...about a time from 1982 to 1987.
