Here the water lies still,
As if to imply that there is Nothing
Beneath the surface, and those that
Jump to conclusions will never see
Very far. I don't remember learning
How to be, and I don't remember
Unlearning it, either, but this restlessness
Has become my own wild-eyed wisdom.
Boundaries have been shaken,
And I find myself with my foot within
This pool of water, tempting the tide
To change direction, offsetting the ways
Of a once-calm surface--
But this is not destruction, but momentary disarry,
A little chaos to wake the water,
And perhaps myself.
How long have I been sleeping?
I do not know, I do not remember,
But the soul in me has stirred unruly,
In an almost violent attempt to exist,
Wanting to take the water within,
But not knowing quite how.
I am unaware of the right words to speak
To move the water willingly,
And so I try to reach out and hold
An element that slips swiftly through my finger,
All the while thinking that I did not mean
To find you here, and I slowly realize
That one cannot step in the same river twice,
And to walk away right now,
Would be something like letting go--
And so I simply wait for the water
To understand my meaning, as I have
Learned the ways of his.
As if to imply that there is Nothing
Beneath the surface, and those that
Jump to conclusions will never see
Very far. I don't remember learning
How to be, and I don't remember
Unlearning it, either, but this restlessness
Has become my own wild-eyed wisdom.
